We created Neilswisdom.com to give a quick and easy way to beginners to create a website without reading long, boring tutorials.
In this guide, we will show you how most web developers create their own sites and how you can avoid expensive website builders who are often limited to a large site.
We also help you avoid some mistakes that we started.
This guide is approximately 4000 words long, so take yourself coffee and let’s start. And oh, if you get stuck (which I suspect!) Do not hesitate to email us – we do our best to help you.
Are you ready to launch your website today? Let’s Start!
STEP 1: Choose the Correct Platform
There are hundreds of different website building platforms and website builders around the market.
You can also code your website from scratch, but I wouldn’t recommend it on mainly two reasons:
- It just takes too much time (seriously)
- Your end result will be mediocre at it’s best…
But which one should you choose?
Let’s take a look at these recent statistics made by build with.
As you can see, in 2018, the most popular website builders (or content management systems) are:
- WordPress (free) 51%
- Wix (paid) 7%
- Joomla (free) 4%
- Squarespace (paid) 4%
- Weebly (paid) 2%
Why Most Users Are Using WordPress to Create Websites
Unlike website builders, this is totally free.
WordPress is the easiest platform I’ve ever worked with, but it’s flexible enough to suit everyone – small business websites, online shops, large organizations and more …
but more importantly:
WordPress vs. HTML and CSS: Learning HTML from scratch can take 6+ months, give CSS and PHP alone. Having basic knowledge of HTML can help you measure things more quickly, but if you want to create a website within a day or two, learning HTML is not a viable option.
Wordpress vs. Website Builders: Website Builders are expensive and are often very limited.
They are good for one page websites, but no more.
WordPress vs. Joomla / Drupal: WordPress is just so user-friendly.
If you want more information, then I have made a comprehensive comparison between WordPress, Joomla and Drupal.
If for some reason you do not want to create your site with WordPress, also see my Drupal, Joomla and HTML5 guide. They are all free to use.
But for beginners, I firmly recommend pasting WordPress.
Do not promptly post your forum. Most web hosting services provide one-click-installs for WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. You can decide later and you do not need to download / install anything.
STEP 2: Buy a Domain Name and Web Hosting
To set up WordPress (or any other type of website), you will need two things:
Domain name (your web address like YourSiteName.com)
Web Hosting (Web hosting means your website will be connected to the internet)
To store your images, content and website files, you will need a web hosting. Without web hosting, your website will not be visible on the Internet.
The proprietary of your domain name looks more professional than anyone else’s domain (such as yourbusiness.my-free-website.com), and it is also very affordable. Most hosting providers provide the domain for one year for free (usually ~ $ 15 / year).
In short – without web hosting and domain names, your website will not be present.
Where can I find domain names and hosting?
Full disclosure: If you end up purchasing Bluehost in this guide through my referral link, I earn commission. It helps me keep website setup current and running and up to date. Thanks for your support.
I have used Bluehost mostly as web hosting and domain registrar.
Their starting price starts from $ 2.75 / mo and they are currently throwing a domain name for free (the first year) – so they deserve to be examined.
They are one of the most popular hosting providers on the market, so they are definitely well enough to establish and host your website.
Although most of their servers are based in the US, they can handle lots of traffic from all over the world. And this is probably cheaper than your local host. As a person living in Europe, I still like to use them.
STEP 3: Set Up your Website
Once you purchase your domain name and set up your hosting, you are good on your way!
Now it’s time to run and run your website. First you need to install WordPress in your hosting.
There are two possible ways to install WordPress, one is a lot easier than the other.
1. To create a website with WordPress (or Joomla and Droppal), use one-click installation:
Almost every trusted and well-established hosting company has integrated 1-click-install for WordPress, which is going to snap.
If you have signed up with the any hosting or any other similar hosting company, then you should find your “1-click-installation” in your account control panel.
Follow the steps given here (all major web hosting companies should be same / similar):
- Log in to your hosting account.
- Go to your control panel.
- Look for “WordPress” or “Website” icon.
- Select the domain where you want to install your website.
- Click the “Install Now” button and you will have access to your new WordPress website.
Your website is now ready. Now you can install themes on your WordPress website as per your wish. There are many types of themes available on WordPress.
Which gives us many types of free and paid themes. After this you can use a variety of plugins on WordPress that will make the website level higher.
